How Natural Slate performs in Minnesota
Natural slate is impervious to freeze-thaw water infiltration when properly installed — it does not absorb moisture the way asphalt and wood products do. However, the structural requirements are significant: most Minnesota homes require deck and framing upgrades to support slate's weight (700–1,500 lbs per square). Ice dam risk is lower than with shingles because slate's thermal mass reduces the rapid temperature cycling at the roof surface.
